Welcome to our step-by-step installation guide for DashSkin covers designed specifically for Chevy and GM trucks and SUVs from the years 1995 and 1996. This guide will provide you with detailed instructions to ensure a smooth installation process, resulting in a refreshed and stylish dashboard.
Step 1: Preparing Your Dashboard
Locate Your Trim Code
Before you order your DashSkin, it’s crucial to identify the correct color match. Locate your trim code inside the glove box of your vehicle. This code will help you compare with our color guide to ensure you receive the right shade for your DashSkin. If you're unsure where to find the trim code, consult your vehicle’s manual or reach out to our customer support for assistance.
Remove the Cup Holder Insert
- Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry up the cup holder insert.
- Insert the screwdriver between the cup holder and the dashboard, starting on one side.
- Carefully work your way around the edges, prying up each side and the center until the clips disengage.
- Set the cup holder insert aside; it will be reinstalled after the DashSkin is applied.
Remove the Fuse Panel Cover
- Locate the fuse panel cover on the dashboard.
- Gently pry off the cover using your hands or a flathead screwdriver.
- Keep the cover in a safe place as it will need to be reinstalled later.
Pop the Bezel
- The front lip of the DashSkin will tuck behind the bezel. To facilitate this, use a plastic putty knife.
- Carefully insert the putty knife between the bezel and the dashboard.
- Gently pry the bezel away from the dash. It’s not necessary to remove the bezel completely, just enough to allow the DashSkin to fit behind it.
Remove Defrost Portion Bolts
- Use a seven millimeter socket and wrench to remove the three bolts located on the defrost portion of the dash.
- Keep these bolts in a safe place as you will need them to reassemble the dash later.
Step 2: Preparing for Installation
Clean the Original Dash
- Thoroughly clean the original dashboard using a commercial-grade degreaser. Options include Zep Purple, Purple Power, or Simple Green.
- Apply the degreaser to the dashboard and scrub thoroughly to remove any dirt, grime, or old adhesive residues.
- Wipe the surface with a clean, dry cloth to ensure it is completely dry before proceeding.
Dry Fit the DashSkin
- Place the DashSkin over the original dashboard to check for proper alignment and fitment.
- Adjust the position as necessary to ensure all edges and seams align correctly with the contours of the original dash.
- Plan where you will place weights to secure the DashSkin during the curing process.
Apply Silicone to the DashSkin
- Refer to the pattern illustrated in your installation guide for silicone application.
- Apply a generous layer of silicone to the underside of the DashSkin where it will come into contact with the original dash.
Step 3: Installing the DashSkin
Position the DashSkin
- Carefully place the DashSkin onto the cleaned and prepared original dashboard.
- Align all seams and edges to ensure the DashSkin fits perfectly over the original dash.
- Press down gently but firmly to ensure initial adhesion before applying weights.
Reinstall Bolts and Cup Holder Insert
- Reinstall the three bolts you previously removed from the defrost portion of the dash.
- Position the cup holder insert back into place and press down to engage the clips. Ensure it fits snugly.
Apply Weights
- Evenly distribute weights across the entire surface of the DashSkin. You can use sandbags, reams of printer paper, or phone books.
- For areas near the windshield where weights cannot reach, cut pieces of cardboard to wedge between the dash and the windshield. This helps to ensure that the DashSkin adheres properly.
Use a Telescoping Prop Rod
- To apply pressure to the front surfaces of the DashSkin, use a telescoping prop rod. Place it in a position that applies even pressure across the surface.
- Alternatively, use a piece of PVC or wood cut to length with a rag on each end to distribute pressure.
- For the sides, use a rag to create a tight fit between the door and the dash.
Step 4: Finalizing Installation
Allow to Cure
- Leave the DashSkin undisturbed for six to eight hours to allow the silicone to fully cure.
- Avoid any movement or disturbance during this time to ensure a strong bond between the DashSkin and the original dash.
Remove Weights
- After the curing period, carefully remove all weights and cardboard pieces.
- Inspect the DashSkin to ensure it has adhered properly and there are no loose areas.
Enjoy Your New Dashboard
- With the installation complete, enjoy the refreshed look of your dashboard.
- Reinstall any remaining components, such as the fuse panel cover and any other trim pieces.
